  34. I'm having similar problems.  Since Late November it's been wet, and
  35. the snow started flying in early December here in west-south-western
  36. ohio.  With the water, my home phone line has started crackling, and
  37. Modems on my computer (PowerMacintosh) and my wife's computer (486)
  38. have been having problems.  I got a new Motorola Power 28.8, mostly on
  39. account of the strong review in November (?) MacWorld.  It can't
  40. recognize dial tone.  Then I put the Supra 14.4 back, and it wouldn't
  41. recognize dial-tone either.  My wife's machine (generic 14.4 internal
  42. modem) recognizes dial-tone, and can actually connect to our internet
  43. service provider -- for about two minutes.  Then it gets disconnected.
  44. We tried setting S10 to something extreme: 255 (Modem waits for 25.5
  45. seconds after losing carrier before it disconnects).  No help - it's
  46. the ISPs modem.

  48. We're both getting very frustrated.  Any suggestions?  I'm going to
  49. call the phone company, and ask about their wire maintenance plan, and
  50. then see if they'll come out and fix the crackling.

  52. Has anyone else had noisy phone lines prevent a modem from recognizing
  53. dial tone?
